Fascinated by art from a young age, Scottish artist Stevie Nicholson has grown into a style that combines traditional portraiture with fun, abstract expressions.
From a distance, these large scale portraits catch the eye with colour and contrast – but up close, the viewer can see the layers of detail that make up the work.
Using the structure of each face as a framework for the composition, Stevie explores the space to add new elements. The portraits feature blocks of colour, flares of light, drips and splashes of paint, print and texture work… each work is completely unique and spontaneous.
“I look for an emotional response in every painting, and I want the viewer to ask questions. My focus is to find something captivating and unique by pushing the boundaries of portraiture.”
