Shaun was first inspired to create sculpture while working as a roofer, where he was introduced to his first material, slate. He worked with slate and, later, sandstone, for a number of years, before moving on to work with rocks and pebbles found on beaches in the Peak District and then Flamborough. He gained a lot of attention for the sculptures he left along the beaches, made from delicately balanced rocks, with news reports on the “mysterious artist” featuring images of his artworks.
Shaun began working in his own studio, creating large abstract slate pieces. After an injury meant the heavy slate was becoming difficult to work with, he dug out his welder to create a custom metal calliper to strap to his leg.
As well as physical support, this project was a new start for Shaun, who discovered a new passion for creating metal sculptures.
Now working exclusively with metal, Shaun’s work has developed in new ways as the more versatile material has allowed his imagination to run wild. Often using existing objects such as coins, nails or ball bearings, Shaun creates figures, animals and thought-provoking imagery that seem at once to be solid and shadow, heavy and light.
