There is an unmistakable sense of character in Kate’s paintings. Rather than simply depicting an animal, she seeks to capture something of its personality, movement and presence. Her loose, painterly approach gives each subject an expressive quality, creating wildlife portraits that feel lively, spontaneous and full of individuality.
Kate usually works on a large scale, allowing her paintings to have an immediate sense of impact and power. Her animals emerge against bold, colour-flooded backgrounds, often filled with the splashes and drips that have become a signature of her work. These vibrant surroundings do more than frame the subject: they can completely transform the atmosphere of a painting, shifting its tone from playful and joyful to dramatic, atmospheric or contemplative.
This combination of energetic painting and a deep love of nature sits at the heart of Kate’s practice. She studied Fine Art: Painting and Drawing at university, where she explored the wide range of materials available to contemporary artists, experimenting with collage and resin alongside more traditional techniques including charcoal on paper and acrylics on canvas.
Her early work included an abstract series exhibited at The Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, London, from which she was selected as a finalist in the Graduate Art Prize exhibition. Her career has continued to develop, including a debut solo exhibition in 2023, as she has brought together her interest in abstraction with her fascination with the natural world.
Today, Kate combines energetic brushstrokes and contemporary painting techniques with the visual language of wildlife portraiture. In doing so, she blurs the boundaries between traditional animal painting and spontaneous, lively abstract expressionism. Her choice of colour is equally important, drawing on the beauty and essence of the landscapes and environments her subjects inhabit.
Kate quickly became one of our most popular artists after joining Watson Gallery a few years ago, and it is easy to see why. Her paintings are bright, colourful and full of life, bringing an immediate sense of joy to a space while celebrating the beauty and character of the natural world.
One of the things we particularly love about Kate’s work is the way it lends itself to a personal connection. We have had some wonderful experiences helping clients commission paintings of their favourite animals, creating something that is not only a striking piece of artwork but also has a very personal meaning.
If there is a particular animal you would love to see interpreted in Kate’s distinctive style, we would be very happy to talk through the possibilities of a commission. Get in touch with the gallery to start a conversation.
