Glasgow-born Philip Raskin is one of the best known seascape artists in Scotland. His fans and collectors, of whom there are many both in the UK and overseas, are able to instantly identify his singular, simple style.
As well as depicting the glorious skies and seas of his native Scotland, however, these seascapes represent something of an ideal for the artist. Philip has spoken before about his intention to leave the scenes to themselves, without interference from any human presence:
"I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy. No people, no houses, no telegraph poles; just expansive skies, mist tumbling on a distant hillside and a silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending".
By leaving his scenes open and unencumbered in this manner, Philip allows the fine details of the seas and skies to take centre stage.
With all attention on the wide expanses of water and cloud, balance is key, and is an important part of Philip’s style. The softness of his pastel-huedacrylicskies has been compared to the delicacy more commonly achieved with watercolours. At the same time, he conveys tremendous spectacle and drama in the stormy or windswept vistas.
The seas are heavy and far more textured, with impasto strokes capturing the movement and depth of the water. His portrayal immediately evokes the Scottish coast, demonstrating his familiarity with and love for his home country.
These two disparate styles used for sea and sky are kept in balance with one another throughout each work, opening up the scene for the viewer.
We have been thrilled to bring in four new original artworks from Philip Raskin, now available to view and reservethrough our website.
In another moment of idealism, Philip has insisted on keeping his artwork at a price point that makes it accessible to many art buyers – despite his considerable success, which for many artists would automatically mean a much higher price point!
