Peter Layton is considered one of the ‘Founding Fathers’ of studio glass in the UK. Peter was born in Prague in 1937, but his family was forced to flee to the UK when he was two years old. After settling in Bradford, Peter grew up learning love art, and was encouraged by his family to follow his passion.
Having completed his studies, Peter originally specialised in ceramics. While teaching in the US, he was introduced to the growing glass-blowing movement of the 1960s and fell in love with the medium. After training and working with some of the movement’s forerunners, Peter started a glass studio in the Scottish Highlands. He later moved to London to continue growing the glass art movement in the UK.
Peter takes his inspiration from his surroundings – the beauty of nature of the narrative of manmade structures. He will often use details like a city skyline, the changing weather, or a famous work of art by a master to create his colourful and intriguing works.
Peter’s work is held in high profile museums around the world, including the V&A museum in London and the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge.
