Born in 1978, Thai artist Paitoon Jumee studied at Thai Vijitsil Art School before graduating from Thaï Pochang University in 1998. His studies allowed him to train in and explore many different disciplines, including sculpture, xylography, and lithography, before starting his journey as a painter.
With a complex technique developed from his multidisciplinary background, Paitoon draws inspiration from the nature of his work, portraiture, to bring focus to the humanity of his subjects, as well as inspiration from traditional Buddhist art styles.
Using a large, imposing format, he heightens the emotions of each subject with bright colour and layers of repeated mark making, suggesting the inner thoughts and hidden life running beneath the surface. Stencil, sketching, and collage may be utilised as Paitoon creates the story of each face…
