Jemma Gowland’s work explores the way young girls are constrained from birth to conform to an appearance and code of behaviour, to present a perfect face, and maintain the expectations of others. The disrupted surfaces describe the vulnerability beneath…
Jemma began her career as a design and technology teacher, mastering techhnicques in many different materials - this led to her to specialise in ceramics. Her experience working in a male-dominated field, combined with her positions as a mother and daughter, also led her to start exploring the themes of gender and upbringing in her artwork.
The variety and versailitity of ceramics have allowed Jemma to develop her own unique style of mixed textures, shapes and materials. The delicate dresses, fine cracks and mixed media editions make sure there is always more to see in each of her fascinating sculptures.
